Other Local Facilities Available to Guests Staying at The Vean

      Shooting at Caerhays

    • Game Shooting
The estate arranges over 80 driven partridge and pheasant shoots from September through to January. On some of these days there may well be room for individuals who are experienced shots to participate. Rough shooting may also be available.Guests should however be aware that most shooting on the estate is pre-booked at least a year in advance by corporate groups or roving syndicates rather than individuals.

If this is of interest to guests we will arrange for the Shoot Manager, Mr John Trudgeon, to contact you.

      Clay Pigeon Tuition

    • Clay Pigeon Shooting
The estate has an extensive set of automated traps and can therefore provide professional one to one training for beginners or competitive shoots for groups.

If this is likely to be required we will arrange for one of the Caerhays Estate team to contact you before or during your visit to establish exactly what is needed.
    • Stabling
Stabling and grazing is available at Caerhays Barton Farm for those wishing to bring a horse or pony with them during their stay.

If required the Farm Manager, Arthur Broom, can contact you to discuss the details.

Alternatively, we can put you in touch with other local stables offering a full livery service. The local hunt is the Fourburrow who normally meet on Tuesdays, alternate Thursdays and Saturdays during the season (September - April). Visitors are always welcome to hunt with the Fourburrow and hirelings are usually available if booked in advance. Horse riding tuition is also available locally.
    • Fishing
By prior arrangement fly fishing is available locally including on Caerhays Lake or on the River Luney although the lake and river are not stocked. Porthluney Beach and the foreshore between Porthluney and Portholland provide excellent opportunities for sea fishing especially when the bass and pollock come inshore in late summer. Tuition and day trips may be available upon request in season.

Wooden Boats for hire from Fal Wooden Boat Hire Co.

    • Sailing - Fal Wooden Boat Hire.
Classic wooden sailing day boats available for hire.

Why not explore the many beautiful creeks of the Fal estuary with its many waterside pubs and places of historic interest.

The tidal estuaries offer great opportunities for watching a large variety of bird life, including wading birds, little egrets and herons. Otters are starting to reappear and there are deer in the woods and kingfishers flash up the creeks.
By using a combination of sailing boats we can come up with a plan that caters for individuals, families or most groups. Boats can be hired with or without skippers and tuition is available and mature students are very welcome.

Please ring Barry on 07967 381299 or e-mail barry@falwoodenboathire.com to discuss your requirements. Click here for more details - opens new page

This is owned by the Caerhays Estate and the car park is locked overnight. Guests staying at the Vean will however be able to make arrangements with the manager of The Vean to hold barbecues or other private parties on Porthluney Beach in the evenings.
